Tipperary Radiator Plant To Close

The Merriott Radiator plant in Clonmel, Co Tipperary, is to close with the loss of 90 jobs, it has been announced.

The news comes as a further blow to the manufacturing industry following several plant closure announcements this week.

Jacob Fruitfield (formerly Irish Biscuits) announced plant closure with the loss of 200 jobs at Tallaght, while 350 jobs will be lost at Arklow with the transfer of the Allgeran plant to a manufacturing facility in Costa Rica.

Formerly the Barlo plant, the Merriott Radiator factory became part of the Quinn Group in May 2004. It has been in operation since 1967.

In a statement, Quinn Group said it regrets to announce its intention to close the plant: It said the decision to close follows a detailed review of the business, which found that due to the scale of the operation in Clonmel it has become "particularly difficult to compete in UK and European markets".

General Manager Declan Cunningham said: "It is with regret that the company has had to make this decision and I wish to thank the employees in Clonmel for their dedication and hard work over many years."
