Taoiseach Hits Out At Controversial Claims

Bertie Ahern has strongly rejected controversial claims that surfaced regarding his involvement in helping casion operator Mr Turner get an Irish passport.

He hit out at “passport for sale” suggestions and insisted he was not covering-up close links to the English businessman.

He struck back against Fine Gael claims of links between his personal finances and helping to get a passport for a millionaire businessman.

Mr Ahern said the fact Mr Turner, who was seeking to build a casino in the Phoenix Park, had donated $10,000 to Fianna Fáil while the passport was being routed through his office had no bearing on the matter.

Although Mr Ahern categorically denied any wrongdoing, Fine Gael claimed official documentation showed Mr Turner had "assurances" from Mr Ahern on backing for the casino.

Fine Gael's Phil Hogan said Mr Ahern was "privately promoting" the casino project

Mr Ahern explained Mr Turner was entitled to a passport, stressing his Irish roots, but he did not explain why it was necessary for the application for an Irish passport from Mr Turner to be fast-tracked.

Record Year For Irish Passport Applications
2018 is set to be a record year for Irish passport applications, the latest figures from the Irish Embassy in London has revealed. It is understood that in the first half of the year some 45,000 applications were received for Irish passports, and it has been suggested that the demand could increase to around 90,000 by the end of the year.

Govt Urged To Open Irish Passport Office In Belfast
The government has been urged to open an Irish passport office in Belfast to meet the unprecedented demand. Making the call, Dublin South West TD, Seán Crowe, said there were 46,257 applications from the North between January and July this year, an increase of 18.85 % on last year.

Despite recent pressures from the Irish Government on America's politicians, increasing numbers of Irish citizens are being sent home from the United States. A total of 27 Irish people were reportedly deported this year alone from New York, with less than half of this figure deported the previous year.
