Seven people have died in three separate accidents on Irish roads since Friday.

The head-on collision happened at Ballaghmore, 6km south of Borris-in-Ossory shortly after 9.30am, Saturday morning.

It is understood the collision may have been caused by a failed attempt to overtake another vehicle.

In a separate incident, a man has died in a road collision in Co Cork on Saturday night. The man's car collided with a tree before bursting into flames at Manche near Ballineen at around 9.30pm.

Meanwhile, in Co Roscommon two men were killed and 17 injured in collision between a car and a minibus.

The accident happened on Sunday morning at around 1.15am along the main N6 road in the Ballydangan area, 6km outside Athlone.

One person remains in Portiuncula Hospital and one has been transferred to University College Hospital in Galway.

Gardaí in Ballinasloe have launched an investigation and are appealing to witnesses to come forward.
