Brother Charged With Fatal Portumna Stabbing
A 45-year-old Portuguese man has been remanded in custody charged with the murder of his brother in Co Galway yesterday.
Laurentino Da Silva was arrested shortly after a row at a house on Dominick Street in Portumna in which another man, now known to be his brother Fernando Da Silva was fatally stabbed.
The 43-year-old victim was taken to hospital and underwent surgery, but died a number of hours later.
Laurentino Da Silva is believed to have been living in the town for the past seven years and worked in a local food-processing factory.
Judge Gerald Furlong ordered that he be remanded in custody and brought before Harristown court in Castlerea on Friday.
Garda William O'Gorman told the court he cautioned the accused through an interpreter, and that in response the accused replied in Portuguese, "It was in self-defence, I lost control, I lost my mind."
Defence Solicitor John O'Neill made no application for bail, but requested that the Portugese interpreter attend all future court hearings.
The Deputy State Pathologist Dr Michael Curtis concluded a five-hour post mortem examination on the victim's body at Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe last night.
For operational reasons, Gardaí, who are conducting a murder investigation, are unable to reveal the results of the post mortem and have declined to reveal if a murder weapon has been found or give details on the injuries sustained by the victim.
They say their investigations are ongoing and a technical examination of the scene will be resumed later this morning.
