Archdiocese To Co-operate With Inquiry
Bishop of Dublin Dr Eamonn Walsh has said the Archdiocese will co-operate fully with the Commission of Inquiry into clerical child sex abuse.
Commenting on reports of a dispute - emerging after lawyers for the former Archbishop of Dublin, sought an injunction to stop the Archdiocese handing over certain documents to the commission - he said he was surprised at suggestions that there was a conflict between Diarmuid Martin and Cardinal Connell over the matter.
It was reported that while Archbishop Diarmuid Martin has a policy of open access to church files, the former Archbishop, Cardinal Desmond Connell initiated High Court proceedings to prevent documents being handed over to the enquiry on the basis that they are legally privileged and confidential.
According to the Bishop, the matter is about legal issues, not personalities.
He said the truth must be established so that victims can sense that they were heard and believed.
Some 5,000 documents are at the centre of the legal dispute between Cardinal Desmond Connell and the commission, which was set up by the Government in March 2006 to investigate allegations of child abuse between January 1st 1975 and May 1st 2004, against a representative sample of 46 priests.
It is understood the documents relate to legal advice following claims of child sexual abuse, as well as insurance policies in relation to such claims.
The High Court case being taken by Cardinal Desmond Connell was today granted an adjournment by Judge Iarfhlaith O'Neill, until next Monday.
