Irish Man Captured By Pirates

Six people, including an Irish man, have been seized by pirates off the coast of Somalia.

The Irish chief engineer was one of six men on board the Danish-owned Svitzer Korsakov, when it was captured as it made its way to Russia's Pacific Coast, early Friday morning.

Four Russian crew members and a British captain were also aboard the ice-class tug vessel when it was seized.

The newly built ship, travelling on its maiden voyage from St Petersburg to Sakhalin Island, northwest Japan, is now anchored off Somali waters where piracy has been a major problem since warlords toppled military dictator Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991.

Patrick Adamson, a spokesman for Svitzer, said: "We have been in touch with both the master of the vessel and the hijackers.

"The crew's morale is good, they are getting some sleep and are being fed," he said.

However, Mr Adamson declined to comment on whether the pirates had made any demands. He said: "Discretion will be of the utmost importance to the safety of the crew.

"Appropriate measures are in place to seek the safe release of the crew, and their families continue to receive support."

In August, Danish media said Somali pirates freed a Danish cargo ship, the MV Danica White, and its five Danish sailors after a security company paid a $1.5 million ransom.

The International Maritime Bureau (IMB) had previously warned merchant ships to stay at least 200 nautical miles from the Somali coast where IMB director Pottengal Mukundan said pirates Somalia were operating with impunity.
