Surgeon And Wife Guilty Of Insurance Fraud
A Co Meath consultant surgeon and his wife have been found guilty of defrauding two insurance companies through false breast cancer claims.
Dr Emad Massoud (aged 52) and his wife Gehan Massoud (aged 45), a nurse, of Woodview, Brownstown, Ratoath, were found guilty by Dublin Circuit Criminal Court of defrauding the two companies of over €700,000 five years ago.
The jury of seven men and four women deliberated for two hours to return the guilty verdicts on day 15 of the trial.
The couple pleaded not guilty to intent to defraud the insurance companies by falsely pretending that Mrs Massoud had suffered breast cancer.
The Massouds obtained €685,658 from Scottish Provident Ltd on March 25, 2002 and €45,338 on February 22, 2002 from Lifetime Assurance Company Ltd.
Judge Patrick McCartan remanded Dr Massoud in custody to be sentenced in March, while his wife has been remanded on continuing bail.

A Waterford bus driver has been found not guilty of the murder of his wife in 2006. John O'Brien, 41, of Ballinakill Downs, denied murdering 35-year-old Meg Walsh. Her body was discovered in the River Suir two weeks after she was reported missing on October 1, 2006. The mother of one died as a result of blunt-trauma to the head.
