Charity Warns Cancer Is On Rise
Ireland faces an impending rise in cancer cases as the population ages.
The Irish Cancer Society has warned of a major increase in the incidence of the disease as the population grows older. The organisation says it expects that the number of new cancer cases will have increased by 62% between 2005 and 2020. But the charity does not expect mortality to rise due to medical advances.

Taoiseach Bertie Ahern is due to meet with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown in Manchester this weekend. The two men are set to meet on Sunday to discuss the planned devolution of policing and justice in Northern Ireland, before attending a ceremony to mark the 50th anniversary of the Munich air disaster.
Gay Byrne Hits Out At Lack Of Funds For Speed Cameras
Gay Byrne has hit out at the Government over its failure to fund a promised increase in speed cameras. The Road Safety Authority Chairman said the Department of Justice has failed to provide funds for a network of 600 private speed detection cameras in its budget. He described the situation as "disgraceful and completely unacceptable," and said he was getting angrier at the Department's refusal to bankroll a system that would save lives. A recent Government-commissioned report said a five-fold increase in cameras could reduce serious crashes by about a fifth.
Train Halted As Vehicle Strikes Bridge
Iarnród Éireann passengers were delayed this morning following reports that a vehicle had struck a bridge near Athenry, in Co Galway. The 7am train from Athlone to Galway, carrying 190 passengers, was stopped in Athenry as a precaution. Following an examination, Iarnród Éireann engineers said they were satisfied that there was no damage to the bridge in Derrydonnell. The train has now resumed its journey.

300,000 Women Benefit From Free Cancer Checks
Free cervical cancer checks in Ireland have helped diagnose over 100 women. More than 300,000 free cervical cancer checks were carried out in Ireland between September 2009 and August 2010. Out of these, 145 women were diagnosed with the disease.

50% Rise In Irish Cancer Cases
The number of cancer cases in Ireland has increased by almost 50% since the mid 90s. Despite this shocking jump in cases it has been stated that the survival rates are also improving. A survey carried out by the National Cancer Registry has revealed these new statistics.
