Galway Women Trapped In Gaza

A Galway woman and her daughter have appealed for help from the Irish government after becoming trapped in Gaza.

Treasa Ni Cheannabhain, her daughter, Naisirin Elsafty and her Egyptian niece entered Gaza illegally from Egypt after being refused legal entry to distribute charity funds.

However, Egyptian authorites refused to let the two women back into Egypt even though Ms Ni Cheannabhain is married to an Egyptian citizen.

Both women are members from the Galway branch of the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign.

On Sunday, Egyptian forces resealed the Gaza border, nearly two weeks after its Israeli-built barriers had been blown apart by militants. The women, who are now at the border, have been in contact with both the Irish and Egyptian embassies.

The Department of Foreign Affairs says it has been working with both Egyptian and Palestinian authorities to try to achieve a speedy resolution.
