Bad News At Clifden As Airstrip Value Falls
The land used for an airstrip at Clifden Airport has been sold at a €125,000 loss, new accounts have revealed.
More than 150 local shareholders were involved in the set up to develop an airstrip in rural Galway.
These included Aer Arann, Galway hotel Renvyle House, SuperValu owner Noel Kavanagh, PR executive James Morrissey, former Galway GAA sponsor Tommy Varden and Clifden & West Connemara Airport Company.
The project shot to prominence following the crash landing of a light aircraft carrying several of Clifden Airport’s backers. Local accountant Paul McNamee and pilot Matt Masterson were killed and several others were injured.
A matter of hours before the flight had taken off, the backers had signed a deal which transferred 14 hectares of their land to the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs.
Latest accounts for the airport company have revealed the land has depreciated by around €125,000 from its original sale price of €500,000.

Inishbofin island is to get air links for the first time, 20 years after it was first proposed. Drowning Tragedies Probed
It has emerged today that two separate inquiries are being conducted into the deaths of two Mayo men off Inishbofin island, Co Galway. It happened early yesterday morning and saw the death of former GAA All-Star footballer Ger Feeney and businessman and pilot Donal McEllin, who were both from Castlebar, Co Mayo.

Galway Airport To Survive
Galway Airport looks set to survive after the Cabinet rejected a recommendation for its closure by an independent report. The airport's future became uncertain in mid-January when Minister for Transport, Noel Dempsey TD, announced the discontinuation of the Public Service Obligation (PSO) air services between Dublin and Galway.

Second Airport Could Land In South-East
The south-east region could soon see a second airport in the region if proposed plans by Wexford council go ahead. Plans for the development of the international airport in County Wexford are to be brought before Wexford's councillors and TDs in the coming weeks.
