Union “Annoyed” At Arnotts Job Loss Report
The union at Arnotts department store in Dublin has reacted angrily to reports that the firm could shed almost half its workforce as a result of the redevelopment of area surrounding its Henry Street store.
The report in Thursday’s Irish Independent said around 400 of the 950 staff employed at Arnotts flagship store faced the prospect of redundancy.
Mandate's National Official Linda Tanham said the union had talks with management in July and September last year about the company's plan to develop the store but there were no detailed proposals.
Ms Tanham added that she was seeking further talks with management over the issue and would be informing them of the union's "annoyance at having to hear about developments through media speculation".
In September, a three-year redevelopment programme will begin in the area around the Henry Street store.
Nesbitt Acquisitions, the consortium that owns the department stores, is said to be finalising the operational plans for the development of the €1 billion retail/hotel and residential Northern Quarter, which it is building in the area surrounding Arnotts.
A spokesman for Arnotts refused to comment on the report, adding only that the figures quoted in the story were ‘speculative’.
Arnotts says that when plans are finalised they would be communicated to staff.
