Workers Laid Off At One Of Donegal's Oldest Factories
Fine Gael Donegal North-East Deputy Joe McHugh said that the future of local industry in the county is at risk as news that one of Letterkenny's oldest factories, Oatfield's, is to lay-off 22% of its workforce.
Deputy McHugh made his comments after Oatfield's sweet factory, in operation since 1927, announced this afternoon that 14 workers are to be laid off in a rationalisation procedure as a result of the recent downturn in the economy.
He said: "These job losses are a blow to the town of Letterkenny and my thoughts are with those who lost their jobs and their families.
"Today Letterkenny has lost 14 jobs, which was necessary for the company in light of recent market changes. If this downsizing is necessary in other industries, Donegal will suffer massive losses".
Mr McHugh has said he feels Donegal is lacking in high-tech, high-value jobs and launched an attack on the Government. He said that instead of simply commissioning reports, the Government must take action and provide incentives for people to set up businesses in the area. He urged: "At the very least both those in work and those unemployed must be given the chance to gain the necessary qualifications to seek employment. I urge Enterprise Minister Martin to look at initiating a national up-skilling programme targeted at the unemployed, under-employed and people in low skilled jobs".
