Internet Fraud Growing Threat

Internet fraud attempts are expected to soar this year according to new research announced today.

MakeITsecure 2005 is a national IT security awareness campaign being run by the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources in partnership with a number of private companies and representative organisations.

It’s aim is to raise awareness on various methods of internet fraud being exploited by hackers and fraudsters, including identity theft, spyware and phishing.

The report showed that less than half of Irish internet users are aware of the practice of ‘phishing’ where fraudsters attempt to criminally and fraudulently acquire sensitive information, such as usernames, passwords and credit card details, by masquerading as a trustworthy company in emails and text messages.

The iReach 2008 IT security report said the average internet user’s computer is subject to approximately 298 phishing attempts a day

Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, Eamon Ryan, said: "It is important that these kinds of statistics don't deter people from using computers or surfing the Internet as these are now invaluable tools for business, leisure, education and communication."

He added: "The aim of the make IT secure campaign is to ensure that all users are encouraged to continue to use the technology, but to ensure that when doing so, they are taking the precautions to protect themselves especially when online.”

The campaign will also feature a seminar on February 22 for parents which will include contributions from John Carr, an international expert on social networking and Dr Rachel O'Connell, safety officer of popular social networking site, Bebo.

The campaign, which is being held for the third time, is being run by the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources in the Republic of Ireland and the Department of Finance and Personnel, led by the Peter Robinson in the North.

A booklet with IT security information and advice will be distributed to more than 900,000 users in the country by newspaper insert and dedicated IT security supplements.
