Irishman Unhurt As 'Shots Fired' At Pirates

The US navy is reported to have fired shots at pirates who hijacked the crew of a Russian ship, including an Irishman, off the coast of Somalia last week.

It is understood that four Russian crew members, the British captain and an Irish chief engineer, named in reports as 68-year-old Fred Parle from Aughnamore in Co. Sligo, were aboard the Svitzer Korsakov, which was heading to Sakhalin Island, last week when it was raided by Somali pirates.

It has been reported that a US warship fired at one of the boats, although no casualties have been reported.

However, the US Navy has refused to comment on the reports, but did confirm that they were attempting to stop the pirates from re-supplying.
