British-Irish Council Talk Drugs
The fight against drugs is to top the agenda at the 10th meeting of the British-Irish Council at the Dublin's Royal Hospital, Kilmanham, today.
Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, will host the Summit attended by leaders from London, Belfast, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man.
The occasion will be the first official visit to Dublin by the new Scottish First Minister, Alex Salmond.
With the devolved institutions in Northern Ireland up and running the Council can now operate as was intended in the Good Friday Agreement.
Mr Ahern said a range of issues are on the agenda. "We will discuss closer co-operation on a range of issues, including the fight against drugs. There will be a discussion on improving the Council's future effectiveness."
In all, there have been some 200 meetings at ministerial and official level since the Council was established under the Good Friday Agreement.
In advance of the meeting, the Taoiseach said: "It is an honour to host the visiting delegations to this historic part of Dublin which resonates with so many aspects of the history of Ireland and of these islands".
He said the location was symbolic of the work being done to promote peace in Northern Ireland and prosperity on the islands and put the bitterness of the past behind us.
