Irishman Due To Be Sentenced for US Robbery

A 27-year-old man from Co. Clare is due to be sentenced today for an armed robbery committed in the US two years ago.

Niall Clarke, a graduate from Trinity College, was arrested shortly after committing the robbery at the branch of the Bank of Central America in Bangor, Maine, in October 2006.

He has been held on remand in Cumberland County Jail since pleading guilty to the robbery.

His family have claimed that Mr Clarke was mentally ill when he carried out the robbery.

Three Charged Over Cash-In-Transit Robbery
Two more people have been charged in connection with a cash-in-transit van in Dublin on Monday, Gardaí have confirmed. On Monday, three men fled a shopping centre in Raheny Village with a cash box. The cash box was later recovered by Gardaí and the men were arrested.

Firearm Found Following Cork Robbery
Gardai have discovered a firearm following a robbery at a house in Cork. The shotgun was found in a field near the home of a businessman at Gluntahaune during searches on Monday. Five men have been arrested and are currently being detained in custody. The weapon has been sent for forensic examination.

Man Due In Court Over 2006 Murder
A 21-year-old man is appearing at Dundalk District Court today (Wednesday), charged in connection with the murder of Aidan Myers in 2006. Thirty-seven-year-old Aidan Myers, of Cox's Demesne, Dundalk, was killed by a gang who attempted to hijack a car in which he was travelling in December 2006.

Off-Duty Garda Attacked With Samurai Sword
A court has heard how an off-duty garda was attacked with a samurai sword as he chased two men who had just robbed a shop. Detective Garda Shane Kelly saw the raiders flee from the scene and chased them in his personal car. When he cornered their vehicle near Lucan one of the raiders used the sword to smash the detective’s windscreen.

Senior Gardaí Faces Prison Over Leak
A senior Irish police officer is facing a prison term of up to five years after admitting to leaking a confidential report into the Dean Lyons affair. Detective Sergeant Robert McNulty, faces a custodial sentence of up to five years and/or a fine of up to €300,000.
