Hotels To Change Menus To Tackle Childhood Obesity

In a bid to tackle childhood obesity and promote healthy eating the Irish Hotels Federation (IHF) is to introduce new menu guidelines.

The voluntary guidelines provided to chefs in hotels and guesthouses state that there should be an increase of whole-wheat and oats on menus, less fried foods, and the inclusion of meats that are nutritious and not processed.

An alternative to fizzy drinks should also be provided.

According to the IHF more than five million meals for children will be made in guesthouses and hotels this year.

The IHF represents 1,000 members; a substantial number of them are to sign up to the scheme, which will be rolled out from May 2008.
