Fresh Appeals Over Dublin Shootings
Gardaí have renewed appeals for information about two fatal shootings in Dublin over the past few days.
John Berney, 29, was murdered in his home in Castlelyon Drive in the Newcastle area of the city on the night of March 6.
A lone gunman shot him dead in an upstairs bedroom of the house, reportedly in front of his partner. A second man who was in the house at the time was also shot and injured in the same attack. It is understood that the couple's young children were also in the house at the time of the attack.
On Saturday night, Richard McCormack, also 29, was shot dead outside a house on St Ronan's Drive in Ronanstown.
It is believed that he was approached by a lone gunman who fired several shots into Mr McCormack's upper boy before fleeing the scene on foot. Gardaí said that they believe the gunman ran down a nearby lane to St Ronan's Way where he jumped into a silver car and was driven from the scene by an accomplice.
Gardaí said that the killer was described as between 5ft 9ins and 6ft in height and of heavy build. He also spoke with a strong Dublin accent.
Although a lone gunman shot both men, gardaí said that they are not linking the two murders. However, it is understood that both are believed to be gang-related.
On Monday, Garda Commissioner Fachtna Murphy told RTÉ radio that Operation Anvil, which was set up to tackle organised crime, would not be wound down.
Mr Murphy confirmed that more than €20 million had been set aside for the operation and would not be reduced. He also said that Operation Anvil had been responsible for the seizure of more than 570 guns, 5,000 arrests and the recovery of €13 million worth of property over the last two years.
