‘Stab City’ Most Killings Per Head

Recently released figures have revealed Limerick has the highest level of killings per capita than any other county in Ireland.

The figures released in an Irish Newspaper compare serious crime statistics in the various gardaí divisions. The figures show that although Dublin has the highest crime rates overall, Limerick has the worst record per population size with five times more shootings than Dublin. Limerick also had the most convictions for the possession of firearms in the country, as well as the highest rate of homicides with seven per 100,000.

Mayo has the lowest crime rate overall, with no murders reported in the last two years, making it one of the safest places to live in Ireland.

Limerick also came second in assaults causing harm, with Donegal coming in first with 275 cases per 100,000 people.

Donegal also has the most sexual offences recorded in the survey with 88 cases per 100,000 reported.

Homicides have increased overall by 25.4% on last year throughout Ireland, causing major concern for Gardaí.

The Central Statistics Office, who has now taken over the crime statistic collation responsibility from Gardaí, compiled the figures.
