New Nursing Home Standards Published
The Health Information and Quality Authority (Hiqa) has launched new minimum quality standards for nursing homes throughout the country.
All public and private nursing homes will be subject to independent inspections to ensure they are implementing the new rules.
The rules will set out minimum standards of care and inspection at all public and private residential homes for older people.
Speaking at the launch of the standards in Dublin this morning, Hiqa's Chief Inspector of the Social Services Inspectorate, Dr Marion Witton said: "The standards have been developed to promote good practice. The new system of registration and inspection will provide a rigorous process to drive improvements in the quality of care. The registration and inspection process will also be a deterrent to unqualified or inappropriate people establishing residential care homes."
Age Action Ireland is welcoming the move, but says the Government must ensure that the standards are enforced.
