Drink-Drive Limits To Be Cut
In an effort to counter the daily toll of road accidents across Ireland, the Government is set to press ahead with a reduction in drink-driving limits despite opposition from rural groups and publicans in rural areas.
Reports this morning say the Government's advisory group on alcohol is recommending that the limit be reduced from 80mg to 50mg for motorists with full licences.
A limit of 20mg will also reportedly be imposed on provisional licence-holders and professional drivers.
Irish Transport Minister Noel Dempsey has already agreed to introduce whatever measures the group recommends.
This morning's reports say the new limits will effectively mean a driver could be breaking the law after just one drink.
Alcohol is believed to be a factor in 40% of road deaths in Ireland and the current limit of 80mg is the highest in Europe.
