Rail Crossings A Hazard To Road Users: TD

Fine Gael TD Michael Ring has called for manually operated railway crossings to be automated and fitted with flashing lights.

Mr. Ring addressing the Dáil said that 230 crossings in the country were posing a hazard to local road users. He said that new trains were faster and quieter so may prove difficult to hear to some local residents.

“I'm calling for automatic barriers and flashing lights or else other people will be killed," he claimed. "We want no more lives lost. What we want is Irish Rail to provide automatic barriers and the flashing lights," he said.

An elderly constituent was killed when he was struck by a train at the intersection between the Ballina-to-Dublin railway line and a minor road that has manually operated barrier gates.
