SF Won't Support Changed Location For Stadium

Sinn Fein will not support a new sports stadium for Northern Ireland unless it is on the site of the former Maze Prison, a member of the executive has warned today.

As speculation continued that plans for a €312.5m (£240m) stadium hosting football, rugby and Gaelic Games matches may be jettisoned because of divisions in the Democratic Unionist Party, Stormont Junior Minister Gerry Kelly insisted the development of the site must begin as soon as possible.

Mr Kelly, who was a former IRA prisoner in the Maze, said: "Regenerating this site has the potential to create up to 10,000 new jobs - many of which would be at the higher value end of the scale - and to lever up to £1 billion investment. Sinn Fein will not accept a stadium being built on any other site."
