Tunnel Protester Claims Deal
A woman who staged an underground protest to halt the construction of a motorway has ended her campaign.
Lisa Feeney began her demonstration in the 10m deep tunnel on Friday 14 March to stop construction of the M3 Motorway’s route close to the national monument at Rath Lugh. Protestors claim the route is contravening the preservation order of the site.
Protestors claim Lisa Feeney agreed to leave after striking a deal with the National Roads Authority to suspend work for a month at Rath Lugh in the Tara-Skyrne valley, Co Meath.
Although the NRA confirmed negotiations with Ms Feeney had taken place, the construction firm claimed it had no plans to work in the area for at least four weeks.
Over 100 protestors have set up camp at the site and many have said they will continue their protests despite Lisa Feeney ending her demonstration.
In July last year Independent MEP Kathy Sinnott has said work on the M3 motorway in Co Meath is illegal and should be suspended.
Speaking on RTÉ Radio's Morning Ireland, she said she had approached the European Commission about the motorway.
However after visiting the site, an inspector from the Department of the Environment said the order is not being contravened.
A small number of gardaí and private security personnel are continuing to monitor the protest.
