Screwdriver Killer Accused Granted Bail
The teenager accused of the murder of a Polish man has been released on jail with a list of conditions.
The 17 year-old, charged with murdering 29 year-old Pawel Kalite with a screwdriver, faces a tough list of bail conditions as he awaits trial.
His conditions, handed out by High Court Judge John Edwards, include a commitment to "keep sober habits", which according to the Judge: "Does not mean that you are not to get drunk or high, it means you have to stay off them completely."
The teenager has been told to stay outside the Dublin 12 area and to make no contact with witnesses, potential witnesses or co-accused persons.
He will be living with an aunt who lives outside Dublin while awaiting trial.
After fears no convictions would be possible due to the corroborative nature of the evidence, the detective leading the investigation revealed that the case would be based on common design, where a number of people act in a common purpose.
Det Gda Maloney said that 200 statements had been taken so far, and although the investigation was ongoing, he believed that the State had evidence that the teenager murdered Mr Kalite. This claim is based on evidence from more than one witness, said Det Gda Maloney.
Mr Kalite and Mr Szwajkos were stabbed in the throat and head with a screwdriver on February 23 after they became involved in an argument with teenagers.
Four people have been arrested so far in relation to the killings.
