Couple Remanded Over Taxi Driver Murder

A man and woman, both in their 20s, are currently being questioned by gardaí, following the stabbing of an off-duty taxi driver in west Dublin.

Mark Smyth, a 31-year-old taxi driver from the Hawthorns, Duleek, Co Meath was attacked in the Fortlawn estate on Tuesday night. He had been stabbed more than 20 times in the neck and chest.

A 22-year-old man and a woman, aged 25, were arrested last night at a hotel in north Dublin city. The man was brought to Blanchardstown garda station, while the woman was being questioned at Cabra station.

Mr Smyth, who was off-duty at the time, was believed to have picked up the man and woman and then drove them to Fortlawn Avenue in Blanchardstown. His partner and son where also in the car.

It is understood a row broke out in the car and Mr Smyth was subsequently chased down the road by the couple. He was then stabbed and left to die in the front garden of a house.

The couple, being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, and they can be held for questioning for 24 hours.

Renewed Appeal Over Murder Of Taxi Driver
Gardaí have renewed an appeal for information on the murder of taxi driver Martin Mulligan. Mr Mulligan (53) was stabbed to death on 28 September following an altercation in Dundalk in Co Louth. It is believed the altercation began over an unpaid taxi fare.

Armed Man Threatens Taxi Driver In Dublin
A man in his 30s has been arrested after a taxi driver was threatened by a male armed with a knife in Dublin on Wednesday night. The incident occurred on Rialto Street at approximately 11.55pm. The armed man demanded the taxi driver hand over a sum of cash and his phone. The man then made off from the scene. No one was injured in the incident.

Man Faces Manslaughter Charge Over Death Of Dublin Taxi Driver
A 25-year-old man has been charged with the manslaughter of a Nigerian taxi driver in Dublin last year. William Keegan, of Pearse House, in Dublin 2, was charged this afternoon at Pearse Street Garda station with unlawfully killing 41-year-old Moses Ayanwole following a row at Pearse Street, on 21 November last year.
