Call For CCTV At Nightclubs

Garda have called for a new law compelling the installation of CCTV at all nightclubs.

The recommendation from the garda came during the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors conference, currently underway in Trim.

The inspectors called on Justice Minister Brian Lenihan to introduce the legislation, which police believe will make solving late night crime much easier, and result in better crime prevention and a higher rate of convictions for offenders.

The policy would require businesses providing public entertainment events, such as nightclubs, to install cameras and record incidents taking place in and outside their premises for use as evidence.

The conference heard that in implementing the policy, the denial of providing an alcohol licence to premises would be used to ensure establishments fitted the cameras.

Delegate Martin Hannigan said: "A lot of people are afraid to go to the gardaí to give evidence against those involved in public disorder, while others might not be able to fully remember what had taken place the night before, as a result of being intoxicated."

Also at the conference, the deputy chief inspector of the Garda Inspectorate Gwen Boniface called on garda management to speed up its review of the possible use of pepper spray.
