Emergency Response Garda Deployed In Limerick

The Garda Commissioner has announced the deployment of a specialist garda unit in Limerick within the next few days.

The move came following discussions between the Commissioner, Fachtna Murphy, and the Justice Minister Brian Lenihan on Thursday afternoon.

An escalation in gang activity in the area, including reports of a growing gang feud, has precipitated the need for action by the minister. There have also been calls from ministers in the Daíl for Mr Lenihan to take action on the growth of violence in the city, which has resulted in the deployment of the specialist unit.

The Emergency Response Unit's (ERU) duties include armed support during criminal or subversive operations and specialist search techniques including forced entries. Most recently the ERU has been deployed to trouble spots in Dublin and Limerick to tackle gun crime.

One incident in the latter half of 2006 involved an ERU team pursuing armed suspects in Limerick after a shooting incident in the city. The ERU stopped and arrested the suspects after a spectacular chase, which the media reported reaching speeds of 240kmh near the village of Croom.
