Shotgun Killings Accused Berated Leaving Court

The man accused with the killing of a father and son in a farm house last week received a torrent of verbal abuse outside court.

The 30-year-old man Thomas Barrett of Cleandries, Causeway, Co Kerry, appeared before a special sitting of Listowel District Court on Monday Night.

The man is accused of killing father Michael Hanrahan, 60, and his son Denis, 27.

The high profile case has garnered serious media attention and over 80 members of the public had gathered outside the courthouse for the hearing.

Mr Barrett was remanded in custody pending a hearing at 11.00 on Tuesday. The defendant had replied "no" to both charges of murder when put to him.

Emerging from court wearing a navy jacket, striped shirt and jeans, Mr Barrett hid himself under another jacket as members of the public began hurling abuse at the man who was lead from the courthouse.

The removal of Michael and Denis Hanrahan takes place today from Lyons Funeral Home in Listowel, from 4pm to 7pm, to the Church of the Assumption, Moyvane. The funeral Mass is on Tuesday at noon followed by burial.
