Ahern's Mahon Tribunal Challenge Begins At High Court
The Irish Taoiseach’s challenge to the Mahon Tribunal is due to begin on Tuesday.
Bertie Ahern is taking the Tribunal to the High Court in an effort to restrict the tribunal’s scope to investigate, and to gain access to some of the tribunal’s own privy information.
Bertie Ahern is not expected to attend the hearing, which will be conducted by his legal team. The High Court will hear an appeal to prevent the tribunal from questioning the Taoiseach on statements he made in the Daíl, claiming Daíl privilege.
His legal team will also be challenging the tribunal’s request for a transcription of advice made to him by banking expert Paddy Stronge in preparation for his tribunal evidence.
Mr Ahern is also seeking access to all the calculations relied upon by the tribunal when questioning him about lodgements to his bank accounts in the 1990s.
The Taoiseach has faced major criticism over revelations at the tribunal so far, and three senior members of his cabinet, including Defence Minister Willie O’Dea, Social Affairs Minister Martin Cullen and Enterprise Minister Micheál Martin, failed to say when questioned recently if they believed Mr Ahern’s version of events given during the hearing.
The High Court Trial is expected to last three days.
