Patients Wait For Results In Fresh Cancer Scare
Hundreds of patients are waiting for results of cancer X-rays and other tests as the diagnosis provided by an elderly radiologist is examined again.
The radiologist, understood to be in his 70s, is believed to have worked on a temporary contract in hospitals including Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda; Louth Co Hospital, Dundalk; and Our Lady's Hospital Navan, Co Meath, and now the HSE has ordered a review into his work.
The consultant was diagnosing patients using their X-rays looking for signs of lung disease and cancer, and it is feared there may be a substantial mis-diagnosis investigation to follow.
A spokesperson for the HSE said the small number of diagnostic tests are being re-examined by outside experts, but "do not relate to breast services, mammograms, ultrasounds, CT scans or MRI scans".
A HSE spokeswoman said: "At present we are liaising with external expert clinical input to determine what, if any, impact on patient care arose in this very small number of cases.
"It should be noted that individual diagnostic tests are not the only means by which a patient's need for treatment is identified and dealt with.
She added: "These matters are receiving attention by senior operational and clinical managers at local, regional and national level within HSE supported by other agencies as appropriate."
A decision on any issues on mal-practice will only be made after the investigation is concluded, according to the spokeswoman.
