The Great Ape-scape
An orang-utan has gone ‘over the top’ at Dublin Zoo making a bid for freedom after 24 years of captivity.
The orang-utan, named Maggie, climbed over the wall of her enclosure, managing an hour on the run before her recapture.
Zookeepers believe the 26-year-old ape's escape from its 'long stretch' had made a very long 'stretch' for overhanging branches at the edge of the compound, grabbed a wall and climbed over, at around midday yesterday.
Although the alarm was raised within minutes it took over an hour for Zoo Keepers at Dublin Zoo to restrain Maggie by shooting her with a tranquilliser dart before returning her to her baby Mujur, whom she had left behind during her unauthorised excursion.
The zoo stressed that no visitors were in any danger and that orang-utans are not normally considered aggressive animals.
Dublin Zoo management have said they will carry out an investigation into the escape.
