Inmate Sues State Over Boiling Water Attack

A Dublin man has decided to sue the governor of Wheatfield Prison and the state after a fellow inmate attacked him.

Gary Breen, 31, of Hillview Grove, Ballinteer, had been serving a 12-month sentence at the time of the alleged attack for having no tax or insurance.

He was set upon by a fellow inmate, who doused him in boiling hot water and bleach.

After being released following the attack, Breen was back in jail before long, convicted of a number of other offences including stabbing a DART passenger who had sprung to the defence of some women that were being harassed in 1998.

Breen is taking the action against the prison and the State for damages, saying he was not protected from the attack and that the man was deliberately and consciously allowed to attack him.

The court has heard that Breen was hospitalised for a month afterwards and received skin grafts.
