Ousted Beverley Back In Like Flynn

The Irish Taoiseach has given his support to the readmittance of Berverly Flynn into the Fianna Fail party.

Last night, a senior party meeting agreed to allow Ms Flynn back into the party after she expelled in 2004 in connection with a failed libel case against RTÉ.

Speaking in Dublin on Friday morning, Mr Ahern, who announced his retirement on Tuesday, said he felt the time was right for her to return as she had now dealt with all the outstanding costs arising from the libel action.

Last year, Ms Flynn landed in controversy over the money she owed to RTÉ from her failed libel suit. In June, Ms Flynn announced that she had reached a final settlement with RTÉ, paying some €1.24 million. Because the final settlement fell short of the original €2.4m, RTÉ had to absorb the difference. The incident created considerable public and media outcry, while some TD's called the settlement a major abuse of public money.

Ms Flynn originally sued RTÉ over allegations she had encouraged tax evasion while an employee of National Irish Bank.
