Bertie For President
Bertie Ahern has been mooted as one of a number of possible candidates for the new position of EU President.
Hans-Gert Pottering, the current president of the European Parliament, was speaking after holding talks at government buildings yesterday on the forthcoming Lisbon Treaty referendum.
Mr Pottering revealed Mr Ahern is now in the running for the prestigious position.
The creation of the position of EU President is one aspect of the new treaty.
Mr Pottering says there are several candidates who could do the job and Mr Ahern would have the necessary experience to be one of those candidates.
He also said he was confident the Irish people would vote in favour of the treaty in the upcoming referendum, scheduled to take place on June 12.
After the meeting with the European Paliamentary President, Mr Ahern said: "By making the Union more effective and efficient, the Treaty will help the Union support and sustain economic growth, create and protect jobs, and promote international trade and environmental sustainability."
After the announcement of his nomination, he said the Lisbon or Reform Treaty was "good for Ireland and good for Europe".
