Gardaí Investigate Limerick Body
Gardaí are investigating the scene where a body of a young man was found on waste ground near Limerick city on Monday.
A post mortem on the body is going ahead today.
The victim was found in a shallow grave near the city's railway line adjacent to Hyde Road yesterday.
The discovery was made by gardaí carrying out searches for weapons following the fatal shooting of 40-year-old Mark Maloney in the Garryowen area on Saturday afternoon.
Dr Marie Cassidy, the State Pathologist, carried out a preliminary examination last night and the forensic examination of the extensive area where the body was found also continued for much of the evening.
The body, which was found close to the Caledonian Park area, is believed to be that of an 18-year-old man with connections to a major crime figure.
Reports this morning say he may have provided the car used in Saturday's drive-by shooting and may have been shot dead by his gang associates amid fears that he could implicate them in the murder.
However, Gardaí are refusing to say officially whether this is another feud-related death until they have all the forensic and post mortem results.
Meanwhile, an 18-year-old who was arrested in connection with a shooting at a house in Southill last Saturday morning is still being questioned by gardaí at Roxboro. Gardaí have won the right to extend his detention to further question him about the find.
