African Academics Visit For Conference

The reduction of poverty in Africa’s developing countries will be the subject of a conference later today.

President Mary McAleese is to open the four-day event for the Irish-African Partnership Research Capacity Building (IAPRCB).

Up to 60 university and academic leaders from nine Irish and Northern Irish universities and four African universities, including presidents, vice-chancellors, vice-presidents for research and faculty heads, will attend the event.

The conference aims to improve the capacity for development and research in Irish universities and in the four African universities in health and education, and the cross-cutting themes of ICT and gender.

The African university representatives are from Uganda, Tanzania, Mozambique and Malawi.

The project began in 2007 and despite its success, will end in 2011.

The Partnership is funded under the Programme of Strategic Cooperation between Irish Aid and Higher Education and Research Institutes (2007-2011).

The longer-term goal is to create an Irish-based international network of excellence in development research based on mutually beneficial partnerships with higher education institutions in the Irish Republic.
