HSE Discuss Further Cut Backs
The board of the HSE is meeting today to consider further cutbacks in order to save further tens of millions of euros.
HSE management are reportedly expected to tell the board it has already recorded an €85m shortfall in just the first three months of the year.
Despite anger from medical staff unions, patients and political pressures from members in the Dáil, the new cutbacks under consideration will reportedly include more recruitment restrictions and the closure of hospital beds during the summer months.
Last year, the HSE imposed a controversial recruitment ban in an effort to remain within its government-allocated budget.
Reports say this year's over-spend is largely due to drug schemes in the community sector and a higher-than-predicted number of people qualifying for medical cards.
The HSE is also likely to blame the delay in introducing controversial cutbacks to the price it pays pharmacists for medicines.
If fresh cutbacks are agreed today, the HSE is expected to arrange talks with trade unions in the coming days to discuss the measures.
