Gang Member Goes Into Hiding Abroad
Gardaí have said a leading gang member in Limerick has fled the city amid fears for his own safety.
The convicted criminal and member of the infamous Dundon-McCarthy crime gang, is believed to have escaped attempts on his life by fleeing abroad in the wake of the murder of James Cronin and Mark Maloney.
The man is a high profile gang member and is believed to have previously spent some time in Spain with another gang associate.
Cronin, 20, was shot dead after the murder of Mark Moloney, 40, in the Garryowen area of the city. Gardai believe Cronin drove the car used in the drive-by shooting of Moloney last Saturday. The dead man had disguised himself as a woman with a female wig and women's clothing to conceal his identity.
Cronin, who will be buried tomorrow, was not regarded as a serious criminal and his sinister death has taken detectives in Limerick by surprise.
The killings are thought to have precipitated an upsurge in violence in the area, and garda fear a gang war could ensue if the situation isn’t delt with.
On Wednesday, TD Brian Lenihan refused to offer his services for mediation in the feud, or that of the governments. A well known solicitor in the area, John Devane, has put himself forward as a mediator to try and diffuse the violence.
