Husband Gets Five Years For 'Jealous Head-Butt' Killing
A man has been jailed for five years yesterday for killing a man with a brutal head-butt.
The attack happened after Edward Daly, 29, went into a fit of jealous rage accusing Patrick Ryan, 47, of looking at his wife.
Mr Ryan, a father of one, suffered horrific facial injuries when he was head-butted by Daly as he attempted to go to the toilet in the Briar Rose Bar, Ferrybank on July 24, 2005 after the All-Ireland hurling championship quarter-finals.
Daly was sentenced after he was convicted of the manslaughter of Mr Ryan whom he had attacked without provocation in a Waterford pub in 2005.
Within hours of the assault, Mr Ryan suffered a severe seizure and lapsed into a coma.
Daly, of Belmont Heights, Ferrybank, denied the manslaughter charge but was convicted by a Waterford Circuit Criminal Court jury last Friday.
The Court was told that Daly later explained to gardai: "I hit him a 'nut' in the head, I said don't be looking at my wife. I hit him another dig as he was falling."
However, the court heard Mr Ryan had never spoken to or approached Daly's group and the attack was totally without provocation.
