Harney Should Apologise Say Labour

A Labour Party TD has said Mary Harney should apologise over the death of a mother and baby.

An inquiry into the death of Tania McCabe after she gave birth to twins last year has criticised Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda over its handling of her care.

Thirty-four-year-old Ms McCabe, a garda sergeant, and one of her infant twins died at the hospital in March 2007 after giving birth by emergency Caesarean section.

The conclusions of an investigation into the deaths were presented to the HSE yesterday and reports say they reveal doctors failed to diagnose that Mrs McCabe's waters had broken days before she gave birth.

The inquiry has criticised poor communication, under-staffing and a systems failure at the hospital. The inquiry made 27 recommendations to the HSE in order to rectify the problems.

Labour's health spokesperson Jan O'Sullivan said this is inexcusable and the minister must bare some responsibility, as it is her fault that hospitals are working under major pressure.

The mother had been admitted for one night, but was sent home after her consultant said she just had an episode of urinary incontinence.
