Ireland In Top Ten For Reducing Road Deaths
Ireland is now ninth place amongst European states for its reduction in road deaths.
Provisional figures released today by the European Transport Safety Council show Ireland is now 9th out of the 25 EU member states.
The European Transport Safety Council said Ireland's improvement comes at a time when road deaths across the EU are increasing.
Minister for Transport, Noel Dempsey, said the death of 88 people on the roads so far this year is a reminder that a lot more needs to be done. He added Irish people cannot become complacent over the figures.
The minister said the issue of a reduction in the acceptable blood alcohol level would go to Cabinet before Brian Cowen takes the helm as Taoiseach in early May.
Last year road fatalities in Ireland fell by 8%, one of the best reduction rates in Europe. Despite this 338 people were killed on the roads, 30 less than 2006.
Chief Executive of the Road Safety Authority said the drop in deaths is not down to agencies or the Government.
He said it was road users that had achieved the 8% cut in road deaths in Ireland last year. But he added that people need to continue to be aware of the risks on the roads and should make efforts to reduce road deaths and serious injuries as a result of road crashes.
