Presenter Killed In Freak Accident
TV presenter and professional equestrian rider Karen Rodgers has been killed in a freak horse riding accident during an event Cork.
The tragic accident happened at Ballindenisk outside Watergrasshill in North Cork. Ms Rodgers was competing in a Three Star competition before badly falling at a water obstacle.
She suffered fatal head and neck injuries in the accident, which took place on the second last jump of the course. It is believed she died before she could be rushed to Cork University Hospital.
The incident was described as a freak accident, with Ms Rodgers apparently powerless to protect herself given the circumstances of the fall.
A spokesman for Eventing Ireland who organised the event said: "Karen was tragically killed while competing on the Cross-Country course with her horse, Kilcoltrim Brigade.
"She was an experienced and successful rider and had been involved in many aspects of equestrian sport in Ireland during the past 10 years."
A full post-mortem examination is expected to be carried out today at Cork University Hospital.

The funerals of two of the Northern Ireland victims of the Cork air crash are due to be held later today. Pat Cullinan, a 45-year-old senior partner with the international accountancy firm KPMG, is to be buried after requiem mass in St Patrick's Church in the village of Cranagh near Plumbridge in Co Tyrone.

Gardai have reported that they are treating the deaths of a father and daughter as a 'tragic accident'. Their bodies were recovered from the sea in west Cork close to their home, following an extensive search on Wednesday. They have been named as Martin McCarthy, 50, of Foilnamuck and his three-year-old daughter Clarissa.

Gardaí in Co Cork have appealed for witnesses following the death of an 18-year-old male cyclist. The male teenager was seriously injured when he collided with a car at Barley Hill on the Clonakilty to Skibbereen Road at about 19:00 on Tuesday. He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body has been removed to Cork University Hospital.
