Tourist Tax Touted For Dublin
Dublin City Council is considering introducing a tourist tax, among a number of measures, in order to raise revenue for Dublin City Council.
A meeting of the council's finance committee heard on Thursday a charge of €1 per bed a night would raise over €24m a year for the strapped council.
Labour councillor Dermot Lacey claimed during the meeting that Dublin is under financed by over €200m a year by central Government.
Mr Lacey said this figure includes the shortfall in funding paid in lieu of rates, the rates exemption for Government buildings in the city and the failure to reimburse the council for the cost of benchmarking.
"Dublin is massively discriminated against in terms of Government funding. Leitrim gets three times as much per capita subvention," he added.
Other measures to be considered include raising the amount developers pay for large scale planning applications.
The council is also proposing the introduction of on the spot fines for littering business, such as takeaway restaurants and pubs that fail to clear up after smokers.
The proposals for council taxes will be sent to the Commission on Taxation which is due to report after next year's local elections.
