HSE Facing More Strikes From Health Workers
The Health Service Executive is to face yet more threats of industrial action as Psychiatric Nurses call for an overtime strike to begin next week.
The news comes as members of the IMPACT trade union, which is made up of health professionals, therapists, social care workers and administrative and managerial staff, announce a work to rule policy over the HSE's planned recruitment freeze.
The SIPTU union representing the Psychiatric Nurses have invoked their own overtime ban over claims their present system of compensation to injured and attacked nurses is totally inadequate.
They say the present system to compensate the nurses after an attack is grossly unfair and offers either nothing or a monetary award of about one-fifth of what a person would get under the Personal Injuries Assessment Board.
The overtime ban is due to start on Wednesday with the General Secretary of the Nurses association, Des Kavanagh, admitting there would be an impact on patients. However, Mr Kavanagh did give an assurance that they would strive to keep these affects to a minimum.
The issue will be raised with Minister for Health Mary Harney when she addresses the PNA annual conference in Trim, Co Meath on Thursday.
