Overcrowded Prisons At Double Capacity

The Irish Prison Officers Association President, Jim Mitchell, has said the overcrowding problem is so serious many prisons cannot function as places of rehabilitation.

According to the Association, some Irish prisons hold twice as many inmates as they should.

The issue of overcrowding in Ireland's prisons is expected to dominate proceedings at the annual gathering of prison officers, which got underway in Kilkenny today (Thursday).

Mountjoy Prison in Dublin, Castlerea Prison in Roscommon and Cork Prison are the worst affected.

Mitchell said having too many inmates caused most problems for prison officers and most risk for prisoners.

"There is also serious overcrowding in Mountjoy, where the 'bed capacity’ is constantly changing as management continue to play around with the figures.

"I know for certain that Mountjoy is not designed to hold 600 prisoners, which it was housing in a recent assessment by the POA," he said.

However, the conference heard the situation is being dealt with through an ongoing programme of expansion and modernisation.

It said that approximately 1,200 additional prison spaces have been provided.
