Gardaí Urge Motorists To Take Care Over Bank Holiday

Gardaí are urging motorists to be extra vigilant on the roads as the Bank Holiday rush gets underway this weekend.

Extra officers are to be deployed across the country along with extensive use of mandatory alcohol testing checkpoints, between now and Monday, to clamp down on drink-driving and speeding.

A Gardaí spokesman said: "Alcohol is the second greatest contributory factor to road deaths and injuries and so Garda enforcement activity will also be prioritised on Drink Driving.

“A small change in driver behavior can impact significantly in terms of road safety," he said.

Gardaí further urged the public to be aware of the effects of tiredness and its contribution to road fatalities, and asked the public to "plan their journeys in advance" and advised drivers they should stop in a safe place if they feel tired and take a short nap or break away from the road.

Over last year's May Bank Holiday weekend, six people died and seven more were seriously injured in road crashes nationwide.

Almost 350 people were arrested for drink-driving over the same period.
