Bertie Bows Out With Orange And Green

While yesterday he was with a party of Orangemen, outgoing Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has now performed his last official duties as head of government - this time at a ceremony in Dublin to remember those who died in the 1916 Rising.

Mr Ahern took the salute of a guard of honour made up of 108 members of the Defence Forces on his arrival at Arbour Hill this morning.

He and President Mary McAleese are attending a mass and wreath-laying ceremony to commemorate those who died for Irish independence in 1916.

Yesterday, Mr Ahern and Northern Ireland's (also) outgoing First Minister Ian Paisley, met to open a visitors' centre near Drogheda, that commemorates the 1690 Battle of the Boyne - in company with a large delegation of Orange Lodge members.

Despite recent pressures from the Irish Government on America's politicians, increasing numbers of Irish citizens are being sent home from the United States. A total of 27 Irish people were reportedly deported this year alone from New York, with less than half of this figure deported the previous year.

Ahern Asks Congress To Give Irish Immigrants Permanent Status
In a momentous speech in Washington, Taoiseach Bertie Ahern yesterday asked the joint meeting of the US congress to "find a solution" to the many Irish immigrants living illegally in America. He implored both houses of American power to "address the implications and to regulate the status" for Irish immigrants.

Reynolds Gives Cowen His Blessing
Former Taoiseach Albert Reynolds, has given his full support to Brian Cowen, who is set to become new leader of Fianna Fail today. Albert Reynolds took Brian Cowen from the backbenches in 1992, giving him the role of Minister for Energy. Mr Reynolds said he wasn’t surprised that the out going Tánaiste has reached the top job.

Guard Of Honour At Funeral Of Seamus Brennan
The funeral of former Irish Government Minister Séamus Brennan took place earlier this week in south Dublin. The service was attended by the Irish President, the former and present Taoiseach along with many members of the Houses of the Oireachtas. Mr Brennan died in the early hours of Wednesday morning following a year-long illnes.
