Union To Address Aer Lingus Cost Cutting

The trade uniuon, SIPTU is to consider a controversial move by Aer Lingus to push ahead with its latest cost-cutting proposals.

SIPTU shop stewards will meet today (Thursday) to discuss a plan of action as the proposals were not unanimously agreed to by staff, despite a slight majority in a recent ballot.

The budget airliner has told the 1,800 ground staff that it intends to go ahead with the measures despite union rules stipulating a larger majority is needed to consider a motion as accepted.

Management informed staff last night that they intend to implement the new work practices over the coming weeks in all areas - except loading.

Ground staff have previously threatened strike action if the proposals are implemented unilaterally, however, such a move is dependant on the outcome of Thursday's talks.

Pilots and cabin crew have already voted to accept separate reforms as part of the €20m cost-cutting plan.
