Irish Students Invade American Politics
An Irish law student has been selected to work for US Presidential front-runner, Barack Obama over the next two months.
Peter Mannion from Tuam, a second year corporate law student at NUI Galway, will spend the summer working in Mr Obama's office.
"This really is an incredible opportunity, I can barely believe my luck. I used to live my life in a West Wing fantasy, but this is bringing it one step closer to reality," Peter said yesterday.
He will be based at the Washington DC office of the Democratic Party's front-runner.
Another NUI student, Chris Joyce, will also be engaging in the heady political wrangling in America as he begins work for Congressman Peter King, a long-time supporter of the Northern Ireland Peace Process.
Chris was offered the opportunity under the Washington-Ireland programme, a facility designed to give Irish students an insight into the professional and social culture of the US.
